I first experienced ‘ tournament fever’ when I was in the sixth grade attending the Clinton Elementary School. Even then I was a proud Clinton Rocket. And that was well before Russia and the U.S.A. were in a race to be the first to escape the bonds of earth and begin our venture into outer space. Rockets were of course important in achieving such an endeavor. Rockets as a high school mascot was a way of keeping up with the…..
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the football coach taking a knee on the football field and having a heart to heart with God after each football game. As a Christian myself I was astonished that so many people would be upset by a coach praying in public. Now if he were out there distributing free beer or pornographic literature that would be a different story. The fact that players would join him because of peer pressure seemed laughable…..
It was a Sunday and we had decided to take a road trip. My wife Kathie and I both love small towns so we decided to explore some towns we had never visited before. But as we began our journey I just wasn’t feeling it. Exploring small towns just didn’t seem to be the thing to do on this particular Sunday. Looking back I realize that feeling was a premonition of what was about to take place. We were traveling…..
Spring is creeping back into our northland. As the temperatures begin to slowly climb above freezing we anticipate the ‘ice out’ in our ponds, lakes and rivers. We have a creek that runs several hundred yards in front of our house and this time of the year as the snow begins to melt I can stick my head out of our front door a hear the roar of the water churning and tumbling as it makes it’s way to Lake…..
When my two brothers and sister were small it was exciting to climb into the old 49 Ford and ride into town with our folks as they tended to some business. That excursion happened occasionally during the week but for sure on Saturday night. On Saturday the car not only contained the family of six but also a can of cream and chicken eggs packed and layered in special boxes designed to transport them to the creamery so that they…..
When one is a teacher and a struggling author opportunities arise where one receives requests to speak to various organizations. Over the years I have given a variety of speeches to a wide variety of audiences. One of my early speech memories occurred when the Junior class of Wheaton High School requested that I speak at their junior/senior prom banquet. I pretended I had kept a diary of my own junior prom experiences and read portions of it to them……
Violet Sager was her name. We called her Mrs. Sager. She was my sixth grade teacher and at the time I didn’t realize it but she was a hero to me in more ways than one. That was the fall in 1955 when many of the country schools consolidated and came to the nearest town school. So in the fall of 1955 my Clinton, MN sixth grade class grew to contain 35 rambunctious, energetic boys and girls. Mrs. Sager was able…..
