My wife Kathie has been in the nursing home now, beginning her fourth month. For me it has been a painful, excruciating experience. If Kathie read this she would snort and say, “How do you think I’m feeling buster?” And she would have a valid point. Her memory loss has touched my heart like no other experience in our marriage. When I visit her in the care center her first question is, “Can I come home with you tonight?” If…..
For the past thirty-seven years I have been living a dream. In sixth grade I remember classmates gathered around my writing assignment that my teacher had posted on the classroom’s bulletin board. It was a report about my favorite bird when one of my classmates said, “Mike, you are a good writer!” I’ve always enjoyed a little praise now and then. It’s good for the soul and good for one’s confidence. Thank you, classmate for making that comment as it…..
I wrote another book! After I had released “The Easter Sparrows” I stated that would probably be my last book. The key word there was ‘probably’. 🙂 Up to that point I had written Children in the Outdoors, Volume I, II and III followed by Nature’s Christmas Story. An Easter story would round things up nicely or so I thought. Five books would be quite an accomplishment don’t you think? Then there were those other nine holiday stories that I…..
I remember the day I decided to become an author. I was in the sixth grade and several classmates and I were gathered around a bulletin board viewing bird reports. Our teacher Mrs. Sager had placed several especially well written ones on display and mine was one of them. What happened next demonstrates the power each of us has with our words. One of my classmates, I don’t even remember which one of my female classmates it was but she…..
Happy Groundhog’s Day! 🙂 I’m not so sure what there is to be happy about as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow earlier today. In spite of the fact that the east coast was suffering a good old fashioned blizzard so I question how any shadow of the woodchuck could have actually been viewed. Living in Minnesota the prediction of six more weeks of winter is not alarming. In fact most of us Minnesotans would smile if we were guaranteed only…..
Last March I wrote a blog titled “Journey South With the Women of My Life” The blog described a bonding time I shared with my wife and two daughters as we traveled to the Mayo Clinic for second opinions on a couple of health issues. Both prognoses were positive so the journey had a happy ending. Then last week an email arrived to remind me of an occurrence that took place in the Mayo Clinic complex that I had almost…..
It was in the summer of l980 when I set a goal that every June, July and August from that moment on I would dedicate to perfecting my writing craft. My initial dream was to become a free lance writer and produce one successful novel after another. Thus forcing me to leave my high school teaching career behind. But each year as June, July and August came and went I remained ‘novel- less’. The first five summers resulted in strings…..
I began my first attempt at writing for publication about thirty-eight years ago. Needless to say my written word never made the best seller’s list in those early years and actually it hasn’t made it in the later years either. 🙂 But one good thing has resulted from such a lack of success. I can proudly state that I have earned my degree as a consignment connoisseur. My first three books, Children In The Outdoors, Volumes I, II and III…..
When one is a teacher and a struggling author opportunities arise where one receives requests to speak to various organizations. Over the years I have given a variety of speeches to a wide variety of audiences. One of my early speech memories occurred when the Junior class of Wheaton High School requested that I speak at their junior/senior prom banquet. I pretended I had kept a diary of my own junior prom experiences and read portions of it to them……
What a morbid title for a blog but it wasn’t as morbid as if may sound. My sixth grade teacher had passed away at the age of 97 years after leading a happy and successful life.  In addition to  that she was the one who opened my eyes to the joy of writing and as a result it became a dream of mine to become a published author. As I was making the trip to Glenwood, MN where the funeral was…..
