Spring is one of my four favorite seasons of the year. Yep, there’s something to love about all four seasons. But spring can be the most frustrating.
As I’m sitting down to write this blog I am exhausted. I’m not sure if it’s because I just finished planting the garden this morning or because I’m still recovering from the eighteen holes of golf I played yesterday afternoon. Actually it might be a combination of the two.
There is also the possibility that age may have something to do with my feelings of exhaustion But we won’t go there for now. 🙂
Spring has so many opportunities to become exhausted and there just isn’t enough hours in the day to experience them all.
Actually there are two lists. There is the “must get done list” and the “fun list”.
The “must get done list” consists of lawn mowing, weeding the garden, picking up fallen branches, and maintaining the house and out buildings.
Since our lawn is way too big, the two gardens too weedy and the windbreak filled with ancient branch dropping trees the “must get done list” seems endless.
Once the “must get done list” is satisfied then we can move on to the “fun list” which consists of golfing, fishing, reading, hiking, bike riding and metal detector exploration. .
I buy a fishing license every spring and before I know it spring has merged into summer and I haven’t wetted my line yet. Since I’m a shore fisherman the good shore fishing is over as the big lunkers have moved to deeper water.
Going golfing has been more successful as Men’s Day is on a Wednesday and since I am on a team I feel obligated to ignore the knee deep lawn grass and instead ride a golf cart for eighteen holes.
If I could just convince myself that the “must get done list” doesn’t really have to always get done and “fun list” activities can sneak in and take their place at times. I’m working on that but it is hard to teach old dogs new tricks. 🙂
We had an early spring so with the snow gone I decided to cut down s few Buckthorn Trees that had surrounded our giant, ancient Box Elder Tree. Well the few trees turned out to be many more then I had anticipated. So it became a much bigger job then I had first thought.
I accidently added another job to my “must get done list”. Do you see how easily it happens?
But I am proud of myself as I didn’t work myself into an exhausted state. The Buckthorn Trees are laying in a neat row on the ground and as the summer passes I will use my chainsaw and attack the branches.
This fall after the branches have dried we will have the most wonderful bonfire and possibly a s’more or two.
I still need to do some exploring with the metal detector. I purchased my fishing license and a couple of new lures so it will be only a matter of time until I find a shady spot along the Mustinka River to test my fishing skills. I’m half way through reading a book about Heaven.
Hey, I think I am making some headway in mixing in some” fun list” items with the “must get done list”! 🙂
Maybe there is hope for this old ‘workaholic’ yet.
Actually just writing this blog has been cathartic for me. So much so I’m thinking of starting a workaholic anonymous club right here in Wheaton. There must be others in the community suffering from the same malady.
Hey, just hold the phone a minute! Did you see what I just did. I tried to add another job to my “must get done list”! I’m putting that organizing a workaholic anonymous club on hold. In fact come to think of it I might just leave that job up to someone else to carry out.
I think exploring with my metal detector sounds like a much more enjoyable activity. A nature hike is also an enticing idea.
Also finishing reading that book about Heaven is a worthy goal since I understand Hell is the only other option. And we certainly don’t want to go there! 🙁
Until next time.
