Over the river and through the woods to a Thanksgiving feast we were preparing to go. Our son and his wife have hosted the family gathering for many years now. As my bride and I were waking up she asked the question that she always asks around the 7:00 am hour. “What are we going to be doing today?” Replying to her question I stated, “We’ll go for coffee, probably eat dinner at the Senior Citizens Center and then pack…..
I first realized I wanted to become a writer when in the sixth grade my teacher Mrs. Sager posted my bird report on the bulletin board as one of the finest in the class. On top of that endorphin producer one of the girls in my class said to me as we read the posted reports, “Mike, you are a good writer.” That resulted in another shot of endorphins released only, seconds later! That experience was recorded and saved somewhere…..
The announcement came in the mail a month or two ago and it read, “Join us for an authentic Ukrainian dinner. We’ll cast vision and seek support to forge new opportunities for READ Ministries and beyond.” Perhaps not all of you are familiar with my two books, “The Easter Sparrows” and “The First Advent” which have been published by Publishing House Smirna in the Ukraine. READ Ministries were largely responsible for bringing the two books to the Ukraine and having…..
Growing up in western Minnesota the first turkey I ever saw was on Thanksgiving morning when our mother lifted the cover off of the broiler pan and there a plump, brown, featherless turkey appeared. Two large drumsticks protruded above the bird’s body and usually resulted in four siblings fighting over who would make a meal of one of them. Little did I know that thirty years previous to the l950’s wild turkeys would have been rambling through our fields and…..
Are there any of you blog readers contemplating retirement? If so, this blog is for you. As a retired person myself I am able to speak with first- hand experience how time consuming it can be. So time consuming that often there is not enough time to retire. Let me explain. Every weekday morning at 8:30 sharp a group of us meet at Subway and drink coffee and share the latest happenings around town since our previous meeting. Well, that’s…..
Our current President has become famous for embarrassing moments. He fell up the stairs, several times, as he attempted to reach the safety of Air Force One. Leaving the stage after a speech caused him some confusion and a sandbag tripped him on another occasion. A bicycle accident also caused further embarrassment. It is not uncommon for our leader to make confusing comments that leaves the listener more than puzzled. I must confess I have been critical of these unusual…..
I wrote another book! After I had released “The Easter Sparrows” I stated that would probably be my last book. The key word there was ‘probably’. 🙂 Up to that point I had written Children in the Outdoors, Volume I, II and III followed by Nature’s Christmas Story. An Easter story would round things up nicely or so I thought. Five books would be quite an accomplishment don’t you think? Then there were those other nine holiday stories that I…..
The uprising happened many years ago, in the early 1970’s. I reminisced the experience this past Saturday as I attended Wheaton High School’s class of 1978’s forty-fifth class reunion. I believe it was the last skirmish to ever take place where Wheaton High School students were attacked by Native American children posing as an Indian war party. Let’s review the political landscape of the early 1970’s that would lead to the unrest between the Native Americans and we the European…..
I am aware that it has been a dry spring and summer since it is approaching the middle of July and I have only mowed our lawn once! Our local paper announced on its front page this past week, “Rainfall in Wheaton was 3.46 inches below normal during June”. That kind of a headline is the reason I never ever considered farming as my life’s occupation. Farming can be likened to visiting the casino every summer with the families’ nest…..
Tomorrow will be our oldest offspring’s 50th birthday! A surprise party is scheduled to take place at his favorite golf course so remind me when I complete this blog that I do not share it until the day after tomorrow! If I shared and the surprise ended up not being a surprise, I would undoubtably be removed from our family tree immediately! Steve was our first born so that alone was special but something else added to the drama of…..
